Ordered Pair

An ordered pair is a pair of numbers, (x, y), written in a particular order.  The ordered pair (x, y) is not the same ordered pair as (y, x).  An ordered pair is often used to represent a point on a coordinate plane or the solution to an equation in two variables.

Example:

Find an ordered pair which is a solution of the equation

y = x − 3,

and plot the point on the coordinate plane.

The ordered pair (5, 2) works, since 2 = 5 − 3.

(Note that in higher math, an ordered pair doesn't have to be an ordered pair of numbers; you can have ordered pairs of sets, functions, or even ordered pairs!)
